What are the Requests on the Media Views Analysis page?[edit]

Hello, I wanted to ask a question about the Media views Analysis page. I was curious what do the Requests mean? On the side and at the bottom it says Requests I can't figure out what that means and the 2 different numbers either Requests and Daily Numbers why are they so different as in one is higher than the other. I look at my page and am curious what that means as far as my page on Wikimedia commons. SVG file translated via SVG Translator has a language selector, but doesn't work on the labels inside the image[edit]

So the archive bot happened to archive the unanswered question of mine, which I would like to revive and get answered, please.

I've updated an existing SVG image (shown on right) by adding 3 languages in it - Czech, German, and English, while German is also an implicit language (the original used in the picture). What's strange is that the picture shows English language instead of the implicit one (which is German), and now that I used the {{Mld}} template in te file description, it does display language selection dropdown menu box, but it doesn't change the labels inside the image. Link from a translated thumbnail doesn't display the selected language in the image, eighter (it does however collapse other languages than selected in the description). @Polda18: By Wikipedia, multilanguage can only be recognized with the restriction that the language switch is not "too far behind". In your file, the switch is defined more than 3 MB after the code start - that is known a non-working condition.
A workaround might be to have a transparent background for the embedded raster image, and define the text advancing the image.
I made a rather cheap workaround: the languages are defined additionally before the large image, just dummylike as empty statements. This way it works -- sarang♥사랑 09:05, 19 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Sarang: Oh my god, thank you. I didn't even realize that there was a limit to where the language selector first appears in order to be working. Seems like the SVG Translator tool is fairly straightforward and doesn't check for this condition to make it working for bigger files. I guess the biggest issue is the photo used as a background, which naturally contains a lot of data. I guess the photo could be a lower resolution picture, not a full resolution 12MPx photo as it seems. Really, the photo takes up vast majority of the file size. Anyway, it's good that all it takes is an empty dummy switch with all the defined languages and the functionality is restored. Photograph of a Victorian Artist[edit]

I would like to upload this to Wikimedia Commons. It is of a painter who died in 1853. It is possibly from a from a magazine that no longer exists. Would this be available as Free Use? BFP1 (talk) 13:17, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • It would certainly be public domain. (Not sure what you mean by "free use". "Fair use" is a legal justification to use certain copyrighted material without explicitly licensing it, not relevant for something this old, and in any case not accepted on Commons.) Do you think categorizing files is a "waste of wiki-resources"?[edit]

Someone thinks that everything I'm doing is a "waste of wiki-resources" because he said that I not only do meaningless things to increase my edit count but also always liked to find fault with all they have done here. Even though he never told me what he wanted me to do, I already knew where my problem was. That person bullies you. Claiming that categorizing files isn't such a waste of resources will never convince that person because it's just an argument to bully you. Just keep doing what you're doing for Commons, have fun doing it because it makes a lot of sense. You help people to find images they wouldn't have found otherwise. If there is a whole group of people and they keep bullying you, I'd consider reporting them for harrasment. Some people do really nasty stuff out of jealousy or simply hatred. They're dead convinced that categorising is a waste of time and waste of whatnot. As said, you won't convince them otherwise, linking to a relevant page won't change their behaviour, so the only thing you can do right now is do what you do and just ignore them, and if they don't stop, report them for harrasment. Yes, he came to me for those who complained so he was completely not interested in my explanation. I'll just give a random example. For example, they complained that I was over-categorizing because these categories I created were so unnecessary in their eyes. To give another example, image grabed from facebook or government website, no evidence of permission for its upload under a free licence, so I nominated to deletion and then they started to get extremely unpleasant about my abusing the DR process. No matter how I explain it to him, he always find a way to convince me, that would result in the untenable situation where nobody could claim "misbehaviour" by him.--Kai3952 (talk) 20:05, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Kai3952: Well, I have no idea on how long this is taking. But if you feel that this is going too long or too far, just report them for harrasment, I'm sure something is going to be done about that. The Universal Code of Conduct (UCOC) is of course in effect, and there are new official enforcement guidelines being voted on to be ratified. Those global enforcement guidelines are essentially to kind of unify the way the enforcement works on each project, to connect the projects even more. One of the key bullet points is of course section about threats, bullying and harrasment. So essentially they keep bullying you, disregarding your work regardless of your arguments. Unfortunately, my account on Chinese-language Wikipedia has been blocked by the Taiwanese admin. He thinks that it is necessary to stop my behavior, like continued arguing without accepting any responsibility for what I did myself. Not only that, he also has believed that my explanation is very threatening and intimidating to Taiwanese users. However, it is what someone believes or thinks, and is not necessarily the truth. Most of Taiwanese who have edited files are active on Chinese-language Wikipedia than Wikimedia Commons (which of course also contains the admin who blocked me) so I can understand why they misunderstand our policies and categorizing files. If I report to the UCoC, I'm afraid they will trust the admin, and then the result is "global blocked" by them.     • Taiwanese users do in fact think differently from the way our did, since Wikipedia Commons consists of files, we are very different from Chinese-language Wikipedia in many ways, I'm guessing that's probably the case. I am currently starting my fifth year on Wikipedia Commons where I am proud to have taken part in the most important and high value tasks. Not only can I correctly categorizing files, but also I can create new categories to help propel the categorization tasks forward. However, I'm not good at dealing with relationships between people, not to mention disputes between editors (personal conflict). Whilst what I'm doing now is good for Wikipedia, relatively speaking, my ignorance is a provocation in their eyes. If you're right, it might mean that they attempt to "overturn" our consensus for categorizing files. Because I know from their complaints what they considered to be the meaning and usage for categorizing files:
  1. When the number of files is not enough to create categories for them. For example, it makes no sense to create categories for those extremely less number of files.
  2. When existing categories are sufficient for current needs and enough to distinguish the difference between each file. For example, it makes no sense to create intermediate categories that hinder their convenience in use.

Copyright Question[edit]

I've found this illustration from an 1898 issue of Puck Magazine. I'd like to use it for historical context for the w:bachelor tax article. Is this illustration old enough to use? Image Use[edit]

Dear Help Desk,

I am a teacher at Universidade Federal da Paraíba in Brazil and I would like to use the image bellow as part of the logo of my reaserch group: Línguas, Sistemas de Escrita, Computação e Humanidades Digitais (Languages, Writing Systems, Computation and Digital Humanities).

This won't be the only image in the logo, just one and in small size, inside of the letter 'O' in 'LISCOD', the acronym of the above mentioned research group.

I didn't find mention to the author, so I wold like to know if it possible for me to legally make the use above mentioned.

  • Looks like someone messed up on the licensing there (and User:Mdf hasn't been active here in over a decade). YouTube clip channel has a CC license, but not the original source[edit]

Assume you're on YouTube. You take a screenshot from a "clip channel" of a podcast ([1]), which has a CC license, and upload it to Commons. Later, another editor shows up and points out that while it is true that the "clip channel" has a CC license, the original video [2] from where it is clipped from does not - and since the clip is a derivative work of the original video, the CC license is invalid. Both the clip channel and the original full-length video are presumed to belong to the same owner. Is there precedent for dealing with these cases, where the CC licenses don't match? It all depends on the file license. Is the file you've uploaded your own work? That means you are the author of the work in that file? If so, are you uploading the file with license compatible with Commons? Commons has two licenses that are compatible: Creative Commons and Public Domain. Creative Commons is the most used one as it releases the work for free, yet it still ensures some form of authorship protection. Public Domain is basically without any kind of license, you're essentially giving your authorship up. If the file isn't your own, then you have to know the license under which the file is uploaded. First of all, Commons doesn't allow uploading of a Fair Use content. That is possible only under certain language projects, such as English Wikipedia. Some countries don't utilize Fair Use, so be careful. If the license is compaible with Commons, you can upload it here or ask for importing from the project. Also note that there is something called Threshold of originality (TOO). That basically means you can upload let's say a logo that is deemed to be too simple for copyright protection. Each country has different TOO criteria, however. If I missed something, or misunderstood, then my apologize. I don't speak Greek, so I had to use an automatic translator to translate it to English. I also translated this reply from English to Greek with DeepL. It's not perfect.

Oh, and another fair warning. Even if you took a photo of let's say an artwork, you're the author of the photo, but you still may not upload the photo to Commons if the artwork in the photo is still copyrighted. That is the case with many Andy Warhol's pictures for example, which are valuable and photos of these pictures would be great to be hosted on Commons, but they're still copyright protected. That's a fair warning to note. Copyright is sadly something that ties hands for free sharing. For the first question, if AI generated work would subject to copyright would depend on details, same as non-AI generated. As software is copyrightable, I presume copyright could be asserted by the designers/owners of the AI program of whatever subsequent works it might produce. The US Copyright Office recently rejected a work as being AI created and thus not being subject to copyright. Most of the commentators, however, were of the opinion the fact that the user was pushing the "independently created by AI" angle was key; that if he'd been really interested in copyright and put the emphasis on his creative influence, he would have got a copyright. Something like Google Translate is pretty clearly copyright free, but if there's a human in loop, pushing the AI in directions to create the work they want, using the program as a tool, copyright seems much more probable. Basically, I think the set of copyright-free AI works is going to be pretty rare or uninteresting; most things of interest are going to be stuff like Google Translate or Photoshop filters, where they take something creative and transform it.--Prosfilaes (talk) 00:01, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Something has gone wrong with File:Artists of Abraham Lincoln portraits (1893) (14591328138).jpg. First the painting is dated 1893, but Pollock lived from 1912 to 1956. Second it's supposed to be a portait of Abraham Lincoln, but I don't think that is correct. Lastly, since the painting was likely made after 1927 it is not in the public domain. @Mikalagrand: According to the file license tag, it seems like Flick from where this is taken contains a note about the copyright, which says that there are no known restrictions for this artwork. One reason could be that the artwork itself isn't actually copyrighted so it would be restricted, or the copyright is restricted, but not actually actively enforced. As for the Pollock reference, are you taking this info from the link in the author field or where? The links to Flickr seem to be dead. @Polda18: Oh, okay. The Flickr link was still working when I posted the question. The image is categorised as "Paintings by Jackson Pollock". From the description I gather the image is a black and white photo of Moon Vessel (dated 1945). So, the image is certainly not of a portait of Abraham Lincoln. Jackson Pollock died in 1956, which is "only" 66 years ago. The picture on the linked page you sent me states a copyright notice:

And since the painting was created and published in 1945, according to Commons:Copyright rules by territory/United States#General rules:

Recordings that were published prior to 1923 entered the public domain on January 1, 2022. Recordings that were published from 1923 through 1946 are copyrighted for a period of 100 years after first publication. Recordings that were published from 1947 through 1956 are copyrighted for a period of 110 years after first publication. Recordings that were published after 1956 and first fixed prior to February 15, 1972 will enter the public domain on February 15, 2067. These copyright terms for pre-1972 recordings apply regardless of any formalities (copyright notice, registration with the US copyright office, or copyright renewal.)

Although, this applies specifically for music. I couldn't find any information here on Commons that would determine when paintings with copyright notice enter public domain. I would simply assume 70 years after the author's death, which will be frankly just 4 years later, which will be in 2026. If the same rules that apply for music also apply for any other work, then year of publication is 1945, so the copyright would expire in 2045.
I'm no lawyer, so I can only assume based on what I can read in online sources. I am also not a resident of United States, which also contributes to the fact I don't know about majority of U.S. laws, notably copyright laws. I know a little bit about Fair Use, but the rest of the copyright laws? Without researching anything, basically zero knowledge. Category:St Ignatius Church, Ordsall[edit]

Hello all. I don't usually edit here, but I saw that the church was categorised under Category:Saint Ignatius of Loyola churches in the United Kingdom. Both the St Ignatius Centre website and the English Heritage listing suggest that it is dedicated to St Ignatius of Antioch, so I've removed the category. Why playing with water is a folklore?[edit]

I watched a few YouTube videos about the Yilan International Children's Folklore and Folkgame Festival (for example, this news report), and the news talked about the government hosts the event every year in the same pool in the same park, but I don't actually know how this is related to folklore. How to transfer images from English-language Wikipedia to Commons?[edit]

Yesterday I saw that all photos in an article on English-language Wikipedia are not uploaded to Commons. I would like to know how to transfer the images to here. See:

@Kai3952: At the top-right of each page (at least in the usual desktop skin) there's a link "Export to Wikmedia Commons". Assuming the file has a suitable licence (and the first one above does, at least), that roughly converts the file description into a Commons-compatible form. You can change the name the file will have on Commons, or edit the description, but in most cases you can just scroll to the bottom and choose "Import". That will copy the file to Commons with all its history, and then you can edit the description and add categories as appropriate. Wrong borders[edit]

An editor conflated 1812 with 1912 and added Morocco as a satellite state of the First French empire in 1812 which is totally unhistocal. Morocco was made a protectorate of France in 1912. Can someone change it? The file is [3].197.153.44.161 08:40, 16 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

According to the map, it seems that the green blob on Western Africa doesn't belong to Morocco, but rather Senegal and part of Mauritania. While Mauritania was claimed in late 19th century according to Wikipedia, Senegal was part of French empire since 17th century when France began to trade with slaves. It is possible that French empire was slowly spreading to north in early 19th century as well and part of Mauritania was already claimed in 1812. I don't see Morocco being part of French empire on that map.

@Hnsjrgnweis: Make sure to contact the president of the organization and tell them about COM:OTRS. Commons cannot trust such claims that "they gave me permission". It has to be officially signed and sent to the Wikimedia Foundation, otherwise anyone could claim they've got permission, while in reality they stole it. Believe me, you don't want to get through legal obligations regarding copyright. It has to be officially approved by the organization in writing, officially signed and sent to Wikimedia Foundation for approval review. Otherwise even if your claim is true, before it is officially in writing, nobody will believe it.
Also, the logo seems to be fairly simple. Take a look at COM:TOO#Germany to learn more about Threshold of originality in Germany. I can't asses whether this logo falls below the TOO in Germany (those laws will subsequently apply in this case). I'm afraid someone else will have to look at it and decide, preferably a lawyer specialized in copyright protection. Otherwise, an OTRS letter from the organization to WMF in order for it to be used. Help uploading Batch of files[edit]

I need to upload two batches of about 100 files each. The easiest approach I've seen so far is to add them 50 at a time to the upload wizard and then manually write in all of the names/captions/descriptions, but this would be pretty time consuming and error prone. It would be nice if I could use like, an excel with a list of file names, captions and descriptions. I've read https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Guide_to_batch_uploading but frankly it's not that helpful. I tried the Pattypan and ComeOn! tools but they didn't work/gave errors when I tried to run them. I also tried pywikibot but it also gave errors. If the problem is that you only want your own creations, that's a little trickier since GLAMorous doesn't have a general way to check authorship. BTW, interactive history browser may do the job for you, or simply go to the history summary page of said file and select range between the last vandalism and the last legitimate edit, then press "Revert", it should revert all the changes the vandal has done even between multiple edits. Unknown parameter removal via Flickr2Commons[edit]

I used the Flickr2Commons to transfer a number of public-domain images from the U.S. Army Cadet Command Flickr account. All of them have the prefix "U.S. Army Cadet Command Change of Command Ceremony", so for those helping to fix the problem, they should be under those filenames here. During the uploads of the Army images, an unknown parameter was added to the File Information template (Notification: Error in {{Information}<ǃ---(prevent template from appearing)-->} template: unknown parameter "1".). I searched the parameter in Edit mode but couldn't find the issue.

If someone can see it, could they assist in fixing the issue or help identify it to me? I don't see it.

P.S. Upon initial upload, the aforementioned error was already present; however, the Creative Commons 1.0. preset copyright tag was not acceptable as a public domain justification. Hence I substituted it with the PD-USGov-Military-Army copyright tag, which seems equally appropriate given that in the file metadata, the images were produced by the U.S. Army Cadet Command Public Affairs Office, under the U.S. Army. Michael Caruso musician photo - profile wikipedia picture[edit]

There is an editor/administrator coming after profiles that have been here for years. questioning and deleting photos etc. One of the photos on Tamara Champlin's biography may have been questionable credentials, but the photo on Michael Caruso (musicians) profile was uploaded by its photographer Luani Kologi who is the owner of "Fragments" handle.

On Danielle Nicole (musician) biography there is a problem with the Concord Records photo. Please look into this and any help you can give me I would appreciate.

Here is the reply I received: @Paulhus15: I didn't remove the photo. I only asked about it at c:COM:VPC#File:Michael Anthony Caruso.jpg. The photo was tagged for speedy deletion by another editor named c:User:Jeff G. (see c:User talk:Fragmentsforart#File:Michael Anthony Caruso.jpg) and then subsequently deleted by a Commons administrator named c:User:Túrelio. Once the file was deleted from Commons, it was removed by a bot from the Wikipedia article. If you feel an error was made, you can always post a message explaining why at c:User talk:Túrelio. For reference, though, the fact that a file has been used for a long time doesn't mean it's was uploaded under an acceptable or verifiable license; it could just as easily mean that no body bothered to check the file's licensing for a long time. The same image can essentially be seen used online as the cover art of a single by Caruso that was released at least two years prior to photo being uploaded to Commons, and almost always in such cases more formal verification is needed for such a file to be kept. So, if the photographer who took the photo had previously allowed it to be used for the cover art before they uploaded it to Commons, all they will likely need to do is follow the instructions given in c:COM:Licensing images: when do I contact VRT? and the file can be restored after VRT verification. The editor/administrator referred to by the OP in their first post above is me and the reply they're referring to can be found at en:User talk:Marchjuly#Michael Caruso musician photo. The other file they're referring to is a file uploaded locally to English Wikipedia as non-free content and thus has nothing to do with Commons. I'm not an administrator on English Wikipedia or Commons; so, I can't delete files. Since the OP has stated they've been editing for a long time and understand the various policies of both Commons and English Wikipedia, one would assume that understood that only administrators have the ability to delete files; if they didn't, now they do. A similar post to this was also asked at en:WP:HD#MIchael Caruso Musician photo where myself and some others responded. For the OP's future reference, issues with Commons files generally need to discussed and resolved on Commons, while issues with files uploaded locally to English WIkipedia generally need to be discussed and resolved there. There's a bit of overlapping between Commons and English Wikipedia, and lots of similarities between the two when it comes to policies related to file licensing; however, there are also some important differences which is why its best to typically discuss a file where it's been uploaded. -- Marchjuly (talk) 03:14, 21 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Overcategorization[edit]

Hello there, when browsing media, I'm frequently struggling with the following problem. Some contributors do a bit too much of a good thing when organizing their media. Example: Category:Timber framed houses in Hennef (Sieg) includes 101 other categories, with the vast majority of them including only 1 image. In order to browse those images you seem to have to click through all the folders. At least that is what I do.   • If each of these is a separately designated cultural heritage monument then it may actually be OK to have a category for each, and if so this is one of those situations where two reasonable goals may conflict. I request a dispute resolution[edit]

Donald Trung tried repeatedly to convince me that there is no problem with my uploaded photos, but I told him that my photos was reported by Beeblebrox for a HOST violation at COM:AN/U. It's taken a long time to explain why did I choose not to upload. Maybe I wasn't clear enough, I explain here again:

  • (1) Beeblebrox has not discussed with me before reporting my photos. He seems to intend for the admin to block me in order to stop uploading. As soon as I feel it's a threat, I will to do other than stick to my gut and keep moving forward.
  • (2) When I'm explaining to Beeblebrox how my photos be used for any educational purpose, it's actually aggravating a conflict. I felt if I tried to argue and explain the rationale behind each photo, then things would have gotten worse. In the past four years since I've already been blocked many times for the same behavior, I suppose I cannot argue with anyone. Not to mention the admin on Chinese-language Wikipedia has indefinitely blocked me. I'm afraid that the best (and maybe only) option in this case is to give up on defending myself. For me, that means stopping to upload any photos.
  • (3) Beeblebrox said: "This is Commons, not Google street view." It really hurts me that he seem to think that I am like "Google's street view tool". I never thought it would happen to me. When someone else uploads a photo they took, only I am being blamed, which indicates that there is something wrong with me. I could make myself do a lot of things on Commons, but I wouldn't make myself look like Google's street view tool. If his intention was to stop me from uploading, then he did.

However, Donald Trung said: "I don't think that your uploads will get you blocked if you do some basic evaluations to keep the near-duplicates out." If you look carefully at the above (1)(2)(3), you will realize that the problem is that Beeblebrox's behaviors to show undisguised hostility to me, instead of the photo itself. I just know that it's not right to violate the policies and to argue with people who correct me. Personally, I've never heard of anyone being blocked for not uploading a photo. The 2000+ photos are in my hands, I have the right to choose whether to upload it or not. Anyone should not cross the line before being uploaded to Commons. I'll give you a clue. File inclusion doesn't have a parameter that would take a name of a page, I think. Link to a page is made by using a parameter link=. I think they can. Specifically the new Enforcement Guidelines make it possible to enforce UCoC when something like that happens off-wiki, with certain limitations, and that is if it happened on a third party platform in a space that was created for a Wikimedia project (like on an IRC chat in the WMF project's channel). Unfortunately, UCoC doesn't apply to a space that is completely out of control of Wikimedia Foundation or any community that maintains one or more Wikimedia projects. Often the harassment happens on facebook, PTT, etc off-wiki places. They're smart people, so they know how to avoid WMF sanctions. I'm a healthy person, but they keep claiming to anyone that I have Asperger's syndrome. Because they complain about I have always doing something to make them displeased. Especially, they say that my behavior is excessively follow the Commons' policies. I see that everyone here doing the same thing as me, so I don't understand what's wrong with following the Commons' policies. Why am I the only one being attacked personally? Living under the pressure of constant harassment can trigger anxiety and depression, which makes it harder to think clearly and focus on what matters every. Therefore, I had to give up several daily tasks such as: to nominate files for deletion, the file description was found to be wrong and to tell uploader about it. I'm afraid but that is not something we here can do anything about, nor is the WMF in a position to enforce anything completely off-wiki like random Facebook sites. @Kai3952: While there is such policy, obviously some actions are exceptioned. One of the most obvious exceptions is protection against dangerous threats and continuous harrassment. Where the enforcement of UCoC fails, legal aid may come in handy. If you feel you're really globally targetted by various global admins, contact WMF Trust & Safety Team. That is essentially equal to the legal action as T&S Team is essentially the legal team of WMF specifically for this purpose. They're going to do necessary legal steps for you. The maximum retrospective period of Taiwan is six months, and therefore cannot to pursue legal responsibility for all previous harassment. The Taiwanese admin had the massive Taiwanese wiki-editor's support behind them. Not only did they not deal with the harassment, but also they accused me of harassing users and going against the spirit of Wikipedia. This proves that it's useless to ask them for help. Ironically, when I realized that the harassment comes from off-wiki places, the NLT policy says I can't take legal action against them, that's why I'm stuck there. As far as I know, all harassment comes from a rumor in August 2019. Reke spread rumors about I have Asperger's syndrome based on his feelings, especially he is acting as a staff member in the Wikimedia Taiwan, which means that his words represented the WMF, so those who displeased with me believed him. And that not only caused me a lot of stress, but lose the trust of the Taiwanese community. Most of Taiwanese who harassing me are different from the account name they registered on Commons, it becomes very difficult for gathering evidence against them violated Wiki rules. However, I can know from their complaints, they know a lot about what I do, so I assert that they are active on Commons. If I really did something wrong, they should to resolve issues through the normal channels, and I'm happy to accept any advice that would be beneficial to Commons, but they didn't. As I said. Contact Trust & Safety team, that is the highest end on UCoC that should be able to resolve these issues. Wikimedia servers are not hosted in eighter China or Taiwan, they are hosted in United States, and all Wikimedia projects are international, including local language projects, that means any issues that happen on Wiki sites hosted by WMF transcend international borders. Taiwan as far as I know isn't part of China (regardless of what Chinese government says), they're independent country and what happened here is they assaulted someone in another country. I know that China and Taiwan do not really go along very well, that sadly includes also most citizens. They essentially let politics influence their decision making, which is unacceptable on sites like Wikipedia. Ask WMF Trust & Safety Team for help and specifically ask for an independent judgement of someone who doesn't have anything that ties them to China or Taiwan (any kind of relatives, any kind of citizenship in eighter of these countries, etc. You need an independent jury that won't be influenced by one or another side, and that is best if someone from a third country comes to judge the case. One photo, multiple uses[edit]

Hi. I've sourced a photo of three US National Medal of Science winners together, from their medal ceremony. (It's public domain, taken from a government website.) Two of the people in the photo have Wikipedia pages that lack a picture of them, and this one photo would actually provide a great profile photo for each of them if it was cropped. In which case, I'd have to create two different cropped versions--one for one person, and one for the other. How should I go about uploading? Is it preferred to upload the original photo (featuring all 3 people) and then alter it? Or should I create two cropped versions on my computer and upload them separately as two different files? (In which case, what do I do with the original? I assume it's still valuable to include in Commons.) I just don't want to make a mess with the upload. Thanks! @IbIANTiA: I would suggest uploading the original and then also uploading each of the cropped versions, so all three versions would be on Commons, each under a different name. Hello, very inexperienced in this realm, but would it be possible to upload a document from the Department of Transportation on roadway standards in the U.S.? I am interested because I would like to use a picture on another wiki (wiki.openstreetmap for the OpenStreetMap community) to help describe how to measure roadways. There are a few pictures in here that are useful to my explanation. Since this is a federal document, I can use/upload however I would like? @Success think: Categorization is utilized using [[Category:Name of category]] syntax on files description pages, categories may have or lack their respective page. Category that lacks a page still works as a category, the link is grey though and only shows alphabetical order of subcategories and categorized pages and files. Category with a descriptive page shows with a blue link. For searching, there is the search bar in top right corner, you can essentially write Hatnur Dam into it and press search. It will search in common namespaces (main namespace, category namespace, file namespace), if you want to find a specific category, you can press to search and then limit the search results to the category instead. If you know for sure you want to search for a category, you can skip the search results page settings and simply prepend your search phrase with Category:, so it's like this: Category:Hatnur Dam. Searching for pages and categories is rather easy. If you want to link to category, but not use it, the link syntax for category is like this: [[:Category:Name of category]] (notice the preceding colon before the category keyword, that prevents the link from functioning like categorization of the page it was included in, without it, it's not a category link, it's the category usage). Category:Hatnur Dam doesn't seem to have a dedicated page, but it is still possible that images are categorized under this specific category. In fact, there is one image. I've found some other images of Hatnur Dam that weren't categorized in Hatnur Dam category, simply by searching Hatnur Dam among image files. Try this link: Special:MediaSearch/image/Hatnur Dam.
